Eskom and two of its workers’ biggest labour unions recently announced the signing of a multi-year salary deal that will see their remuneration increase by 7% annually over the next three years.
Solidarity secretary-general Gideon Du Plessis says that most Eskom workers are earning well below the average annual cost per employee of R1.027 million.
Eskom has rejected claims by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) that its management’s remuneration increased by 100% across the board.
The demand comes despite Eskom already having paid additional short-term incentives to reward workers’ for improving plant performance.
