The rand is “treading water” around R16 to the dollar at the moment, as global uncertainty has markets in a ‘wait-and-see’ mode, and tensions in the Middle East push traders into gold.
The index implies that the US dollar should cost less than R9 – ‘that’s the danger of using just one product, but however you look at it, the rand is still undervalued’: Johann Els, chief economist at PSG Financial Services.
The rand has broken through R16 to the dollar for the first time since June 2022.
The rand has hit its strongest levels in three years, pushing toward R16.30/$ from over R19.00/$ a year ago. And investors think things will get better still.
